BMW reports 34% rise in electric vehicle sales for H1 2024

The BMW Group has posted impressive growth figures for the first half of 2024, particularly in the fully-electric vehicle segment and the upper premium market. With 179,557 fully electric BMW vehicles delivered, the brand achieved a significant 34.1% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. Overall, the BMW brand saw a global sales increase of 2.3%, totaling 1,096,486 units sold in the first half of 2024.

The BMW Group, encompassing BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce, delivered a total of 1,213,359 vehicles worldwide. Despite a challenging market environment, the company saw substantial growth in Europe and North America, with BMW gaining considerable market share in these regions.

Key Highlights

– Electric Vehicles: The strong demand for fully electric models was a driving force behind BMW’s growth. The BMW i4 and BMW iX3 were particularly popular, contributing to the 34.1% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales.

– Premium Segment: The BMW 7 Series saw a remarkable 22% growth in sales, highlighting the increasing popularity of upper premium models. Additionally, the BMW X1 and BMW 3 Series experienced significant sales boosts.

– BMW M Performance: BMW M GmbH reported a 5.1% increase in sales, driven by the introduction of the first M5 high-performance sedan with an electrified drivetrain.

– MINI and Rolls-Royce: MINI sold 114,054 vehicles, with positive responses to the new MINI Cooper. Rolls-Royce delivered 2,819 cars, with the Cullinan Series II being the most sought-after model.

Jochen Goller, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales, expressed confidence in the company’s performance, attributing the success to the strong commitment of BMW Group employees and the robust global retail network. Goller also highlighted the ongoing market launches, including the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the first BMW i5 Touring, as key drivers for continued growth in the second half of the year.

Regional Performance

– Europe: Sales grew by 2.6%, totaling 460,144 units, despite a slight decline in Germany.

– Asia: A slight decrease of 3.6% in sales, with 493,364 units delivered, primarily impacted by a 4.2% drop in China.

– Americas: The region saw a 2.1% increase, with 229,302 units sold. The U.S. market contributed significantly with a 1.5% growth.

As BMW Group looks ahead to the second half of 2024, the company remains optimistic about its diverse product portfolio and the flexibility to meet varying customer preferences worldwide.
