Bapco Energies and TotalEnergies to cooperate on refinery optimisation, product trading
On March 4, 2024, TotalEnergies announced a partnership with Bapco Energies, the national energy company of Bahrain. As part of their collaboration, the global integrated energy company will support Bapco Energies in optimising its downstream petroleum operations, including its Sitra refinery which is currently being upgraded, and will provide expertise in the trading of petroleum products.
The announcement comes one day after a meeting in Bahrain between His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Cchairman of Bapco Energies and His Majesty the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, Mark Thomas, Group CEO of Bapco Energies, and Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, to discuss the framework for cooperation.
Active in nearly 130 countries, TotalEnergies produces and distributes a wide range of energy sources, including oil, biofuels, natural gas, renewables and electricity. “Bapco Energies and TotalEnergies’ collaboration will pursue opportunities for the Kingdom of Bahrain’s oil and gas products and offer new energy solutions to our customers,” says Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The French multinational will lend its full expertise along the integrated oil, LNG and power value chains, says Pouyanné.
Bapco is undertaking a major expansion and upgrade of its existing refinery as part of the USD7 billion Bapco Modernization Programme (BMP). The project will increase capacity from 267,000 to 380,000 barrels per day (bpd) and upgrade older and less efficient refinery units. This will allow the company to be more competitive in the modern market and meet the challenges of the future.
