Bangchak and Shell partner on sustainable aviation fuel supply
Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, a prominent leader in sustainable energy in Thailand, has announced a significant partnership with Shell International Eastern Trading Company. The agreement outlines the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) certified by ISCC EU/CORSIA to Shell, marking a pivotal step in advancing the aviation industry’s transition to low-carbon solutions.
Sustainable aviation fuel is a critical innovation in reducing emissions from flying and plays a key role in achieving the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) net-zero carbon goal by 2050. SAF provides a renewable alternative to fossil-based jet fuel, delivering significant carbon reduction benefits without compromising performance.
Bangchak has been at the forefront of SAF development since introducing its initial SAF business plan in September 2022. The company is constructing a production facility in Bangkok that will utilise used cooking oil as a primary feedstock. With a projected capacity of 1,000,000 litres per day, the plant is set to commence operations in the second quarter of 2025.
Speaking about the partnership, Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Group CEO and president of Bangchak, said, “This agreement strengthens Bangchak’s vision to lead sustainable energy innovation. Partnering with Shell enables us to expand our reach in delivering cleaner aviation fuels and supports our commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.”
Echoing these sentiments, Tan Chee Chung, president of Shell International Eastern Trading Company, remarked, “Shell and Bangchak’s collaboration has been long-standing in Thailand, and this agreement is a testament to our shared dedication to sustainability in the aviation industry.”
This partnership highlights the shared goals of Bangchak and Shell in supporting the aviation sector’s decarbonisation efforts. By leveraging their combined resources and expertise, the collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel, reinforcing their commitment to a low-carbon future.
