ASTM developing more efficient test for lubricating greases

A proposed ASTM International standard is aimed at creating a faster, simpler way to test the stability of lubricating greases.  The test method could provide benefits such as using a smaller sample and providing results in a shorter time compared to other methods.

Specifically, the standard will test the oxidation stability of lubricating greases under accelerated oxidation conditions. This will help determine the longevity of the product.

ASTM’s Subcommittee on Oxidation of Greases (part of Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants) is developing the standard: Test Method for Oxidation Stability of Lubricating Greases – Modified Rapid Small Scale Oxidation Test (mRSSOT), WK55271.

Lubricating grease producers, independent testing laboratories, research and development teams for new lubricating greases, and actual users of the grease could all benefit from the new test method.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards.
