Ampol partners with BYD to boost EV uptake in Australia

Australia’s Ampol Ltd. and Chinese automaker BYD announced a new partnership to support the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) across Australia. Under the agreement, Ampol and BYD will build integrated offers for new EV owners to ensure the availability of seamless charging solutions both at-home and on the road.

EVDirect.com CEO and Managing Director Luke Todd said the partnership with Ampol will give Australian BYD customers confidence in the availability of convenient charging solutions wherever they need them across the country.

“Ampol is Australia’s leader in transport fuels and has embarked on a strategy to become the Australian leader in EV charging. With the ongoing rollout of AmpCharge across Ampol forecourts and at destinations like shopping centres along with the ability to deliver charging in the home, BYD customers can feel confident they will be able to charge their EV wherever they need,” said Todd.

“Being able to partner with like-minded companies to help everyday Australians and businesses transition to future fuels and energy solutions, is at the very core of BYD’s plans to enable more Australians to have access to and benefit from driving high quality electric vehicles in an affordable and convenient manner.”

Ampol CEO and Managing Director Matthew Halliday said Ampol was excited to partner with a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing as the rollout of AmpCharge continues.

“The electrification of mobility is one of the megatrends in the energy space, which creates enormous opportunities for our future. The ongoing roll out of AmpCharge is gathering momentum, with an initial commitment to roll out new fast charging infrastructure to almost 140 locations, including both forecourt and at-destination charging sites. We are also developing our plans for a home and business charging offer.

“We know fast charging at our retail sites and elsewhere is going to play an important role to reduce range anxiety and provide Australians with the confidence they need to transition to EVs, and this partnership with BYD will further extend our opportunity to support the uptake of battery electric vehicles across Australia.”

Under the partnership, Ampol will partner to deliver BYD customers:

  • AmpCharge home charging solutions;
  • Business charging solutions for fleet customers of BYD vehicles;
  • Subscription packages and charging offers, including bundles for public and private charging.

Ampol has an initial commitment to deliver AmpCharge EV fast charging infrastructure at almost 140 locations, with 360 charging bays to be delivered. This includes a commitment to 120 sites nationally by December 2023 as part of an agreement with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), with ARENA providing partial funding backed by the Australian Government.

In addition, Ampol has recently announced it will deliver 110 fast charging bays at 19 new AmpCharge sites throughout Greater Sydney and regional NSW, with the New South Wales (NSW) Government co-funding more than AUD9 million (USD5.7 million) for this infrastructure. These 19 sites will have a minimum of four charging bays and several sites will have up to 10 charging bays to act as hub sites for EV drivers.

Ampol’s partnership with BYD Automotive is the second to be announced with vehicle manufacturers as it continues to roll out AmpCharge.

In early October, Ampol announced a collaboration with South Korea’s Hyundai Motor to deliver integrated solutions to customers looking to operate fuel cell electric vehicles powered by hydrogen.
