American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) President Charles T. Drevna testified before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works

“Although AFPM is pleased that EPA acknowledged the blendwall and took initial steps to mitigate the impacts, we believe EPA must go further in order to alleviate the pressure in 2014.  Moreover, it is critical that Congress recognize that EPA’s action is not a sustainable long-term solution to these problems. Lurching from year to year and lawsuit to lawsuit is no way to conduct federal energy policy – Congressional action is needed to bring long-term certainty to fuels markets.

“Just as the European Union recently decided to rollback its biofuel mandates in response to concerns about the environmental and agricultural impacts, Congress should look at the facts and take action to stem the consequences of this law before they grow worse. We now know that the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is raising food and fuel costs, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, reversing advancements in air and water quality, and increasing the likelihood of engine damage. Add to that the technological innovations in oil and gas production that have lead to an energy renaissance in the United States. The RFS is no longer necessary, is flawed at its core, and its implementation has demonstrated the extent of the mandate’s un-workability.”
