ACCC sues Mobil over misleading fuel claims in Queensland
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has initiated legal proceedings against Mobil Oil Australia Pty Ltd, alleging false or misleading representations about fuel sold at six Mobil-branded petrol stations in north and central Queensland between August 2020 and July 2024.
According to the ACCC, Mobil falsely claimed through signage and promotional materials that the fuel sold at these sites was ‘Mobil Synergy’ fuel, purportedly containing additives designed to improve engine performance, reduce emissions, and provide other benefits. The ACCC alleges that no Mobil Synergy fuel was supplied to these locations during the specified period.
The six petrol stations under scrutiny are located in Rasmussen, Yeppoon, Barcaldine, Rural View, Proserpine, and Aitkenvale. The commission contends that Mobil’s claims misled consumers into believing the fuel offered benefits such as protecting engines from corrosion, reducing harmful deposits, and improving fuel efficiency.
“Consumers have no way of verifying the claims made about the fuel they put into their tank and rely on the accuracy of claims made by the fuel supplier,” ACCC Commissioner Liza Carver said. “We allege that Mobil’s conduct denied consumers the opportunity to make an informed purchasing decision and may have diverted some away from other suppliers.”
The ACCC is seeking penalties, declarations, and other orders to address the alleged violations under the Australian Consumer Law.
