Toyota eyes doubling cumulative hybrid car sales to 5 million units

Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. said it will seek to nearly double cumulative global sales of hybrid vehicles to 5 million units, under a five-year (Fiscal Year 2011-2015) management plan designed to harmonize its business activities with the environment. However, a separate report from the Nikkan Kogyo newspaper said that Toyota has reduced its earlier target of 1 million units to only 740,000 units in 2011, a 7% rise. The five-year plan also targets a 25% cut in carbon dioxide emissions from Toyota’s domestic manufacturing operations compared with 1990 levels. Toyota also plans to sell several tens of thousands of plug-in hybrid vehicles each year starting in 2012 and release a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle by Fiscal Year 2015. (August 25, 2010)
