South Korea outlines green growth strategy
South Korea (SK) has strengthened its strategy for green growth, concentrating on different sectors and its relationship with other nations, in order to cope with the economic downturn and secure growth momentum. In order to improve conditions in the country’s maritime industry, the SK government proposed that the three fields of maritime logistics be made more environmentally friendly: shipping, ports and supply chain management. Also, it suggested that an “eco ship” be developed, so as to minimize carbon emissions. Renewable energy is also on top of the SK government’s list. It has outlined hydrogen as one of the key energy sources that needs to be harnessed, as hydrogen can be stored and used continuously and transported for long distances. The SK government recognizes, as well, that while transportation is important, a system has to be devised that minimizes air and noise pollution and road congestion. The transport sector, the government said, is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, due to fossil fuel combustion in engines. Thus, SK emphasized the connection between renewable fuels and vehicles. The government also said there must be policies that make room for technological advancements that minimize greenhouse gas emissions and infrastructure improvements as well. As SK recognizes it will have to rely on other countries for help regarding improvement and sustainability of its energy supply, is has also tried to improve upon its connections with other countries, such as Canada, which is a leading source of clean energy, aside from having the second-largest proven petroleum reserves in the world.
