Fiji targets cassava ethanol
A feasibility report compiled by a Chinese delegation showed that there is huge potential for investment in ethanol made from cassava feedstock in Fiji. The study, which was presented to the Fiji government in April, proposed the construction of an ethanol-making facility worth US$40 million in the country. According to Department of Energy Biofuel Unit Engineer Vilimone Vosarogo, the study showed there would be market opportunities for farmers if the facility was constructed in Fiji. Interested farmers could contact the government, he said, and necessary arrangements would be made for the cassava to be transported when it is ready for harvest. (April 11, 2009)
