French shipper launches containership with fast oil recovery
French container shipping group CMA CGM has launched in South Korea a container ship equipped with a tool that can help ships prevent marine pollution and other advanced “green” features. The vessel, CMA CGM Andromeda, features new technology called the “Fast Oil Recovery System” which allows oil contained in tanks to be recovered without having to open a hole in the vessel’s hull, which is the current method used to recover oil, CMA CGN said in a statement. Initially designed for oil tankers, the recovery device has been adapted to be used in container ships. Other new environmental measures on the container ship include an engine, which better optimizes fuel and lubricants consumption, which have been reduced by 3% and 25%, respectively compared to a standard containership. It also features a more efficient hull design. (March 18, 2009)
