Honda to build new plant for fuel cell systems in Japan
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has revealed plans to establish a cutting-edge production facility in Moka City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, to manufacture its next-generation fuel cell systems. The plant will utilise the site of Honda’s recently decommissioned powertrain unit factory and is expected to commence operations by the fiscal year ending March 2028.
This facility will be Hondaโs first dedicated plant for independently developed fuel cell systems, boasting an annual production capacity of 30,000 units. The initiative aligns with Japan’s broader Green Transformation (GX) efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with Honda set to receive government subsidies of up to JPY14.78 billion (USD94 million) to support the project.
Honda is targeting four key domains for its hydrogen fuel cell technology: fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), commercial vehicles, stationary power stations, and construction machinery. The automaker aims to secure a 5% share of the fuel cell-powered truck market by 2030 and an ambitious 30% share by 2040.
By leveraging its innovative fuel cell system, Honda continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable mobility solutions while contributing to Japan’s clean energy goals.
