UTP and EKA partner to drive sustainable energy, EV innovation
Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Enggang Keramat Automotive Sdn Bhd (EKA) have announced a groundbreaking partnership to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy and electric vehicle (EV) technology in Malaysia. This strategic collaboration marks a significant step forward in UTP’s mission to become a leader in EV research and development.
The partnership supports Malaysia’s broader goal of achieving a low-carbon future and aligns with UTP’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy and clean transportation. Central to the collaboration are three key initiatives that aim to transform UTP’s campus and the nation’s EV landscape.
The first initiative involves the development of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) panels integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) for UTP’s campus. This project will generate and store clean energy, contributing to UTP’s goal of becoming a low-carbon campus.
The second initiative will see EKA operating electric buses for UTP’s internal transportation needs, showcasing the potential of EV technology for green mobility and further enhancing the campus’ sustainability efforts.
The third initiative is the establishment of a world-class Centre of Excellence for Electrical Vehicles (COEEV) at UTP. This centre will conduct cutting-edge research, develop innovative EV technologies, and offer industry-leading training and certification programs to support the growth of the EV industry in Malaysia.
“This partnership is a catalyst for groundbreaking research in the EV sector, and we are excited to lead the way in developing innovative solutions. By combining UTP’s research capabilities with EKA’s industry expertise, we will create a robust ecosystem for EV technology development in Malaysia,” said Professor Datuk Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, vice-chancellor of UTP.
The collaboration is expected to generate significant economic and environmental benefits, including job creation, technology transfer, and reduced carbon emissions. These efforts align with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) 2023, which outlines the country’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
In addition, the partnership aims to address the growing demand for skilled EV professionals by developing industry-certified training programs. This initiative will help equip Malaysia’s workforce with the necessary skills to support the rapidly evolving EV industry.
