NREL report highlights biodiesel quality improvements in 2023
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research located in Golden, Colorado, U.S.A., has released its latest report on the BQ-9000 biodiesel properties.
The study was conducted in collaboration with Clean Fuels Alliance America, the national trade association representing the biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industries in the United States.
The report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of critical biodiesel quality parameters, highlighted significant advancements in fuel quality for the calendar year 2023.
Key findings from the report
The 2023 assessment reveals improvements across various critical parameters, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulphur content. The average sodium content was reported at 0.266 parts per million (ppm), with potassium at 0.326 ppm. These values indicate enhanced purification processes in biodiesel production.
Oxidation stability, a crucial factor for biodiesel longevity, averaged 9.4 hours, while kinematic viscosity was recorded at 4.3 mm²/s, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency of biodiesel in engines.
The biodiesel samples were evaluated against ASTM D6751-23 specification, the standard specification for biodiesel fuel blend stock (B100) for middle distillate fuels. This specification ensures the quality and performance of biodiesel fuel used in various applications, including transportation and heating. Notably, the flash point and cetane number of the biodiesel samples exceeded the minimum requirements, reflecting high safety and combustion quality.
The report is based on anonymised monthly data from U.S. and Canadian-based biodiesel producers who are BQ-9000 certified. BQ-9000 is a quality management certification program designed specifically for the biodiesel industry.
The report includes new data on kinematic viscosity, sulfated ash, distillation temperature, carbon residue, and individual levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Dr. Robert L. McCormick, the lead author of the report, emphasised the importance of continuous quality monitoring. “Our findings demonstrate the industry’s dedication to producing high-quality biodiesel that meets stringent standards and supports environmental sustainability,” he said.
The report serves as a benchmark for producers, offering insights into areas for improvement and confirming the effectiveness of current practices. The comprehensive data collection and analysis provide valuable feedback to producers, aiding in the consistent production of high-quality biodiesel.
