Infineum publishes its third sustainability report

Infineum, based in Milton Hill, UK, announced the publication of its Third Annual Sustainability report.

Together, we can help maintain our quality of life as human beings, retain the diversity of life on Earth, and enable the Earth’s ecosystems to thrive,” said Aldo Govi, Infineum’s new chief executive officer (CEO). 

The sustainability report shares the leading petroleum additive company’s 2022 performance with some key highlights such as a 14% reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2018.  Infineum was established in 1999 as a 50-50 joint venture between ExxonMobil and Shell, carved out by these two energy majors’ additives business.

In 2022, the company announced its ambition to reach net zero for scope 1 and 2 of its operated assets GHG emissions by 2050. This represents a significant extension of its current efforts to reduce GHG emissions intensity generated from its operations by 20% by 2025.

Infineum operates six manufacturing plants: New Jersey, U.S.A.; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Cologne, Germany; Vado Ligure, Italy; Singapore; and Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, China. In addition, it has two sites in France operated by site partners in Berre and Notre-Dame-de-Gravenchon. The company also works closely with more than 20 off-site processors and custom manufacturers which produce Infineum products.

Infineum also carried out sustainability evaluations of its full product portfolio and sustainability assessments on 58% of relevant supplier spend. 

“The number of colleagues volunteering increased to 16% of the organisation, taking us closer to our 2025 aim of 25% of the organisation,” the company said.

Infineum said its expectations are to help reduce scope 3 emissions by about 20% by 2030.

“To support this, scope 3 upstream and downstream emissions have been characterized using the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard,” the report said. The Scope 3 Standard provides a methodology that can be used to account for and report emissions from companies of all sectors, globally. 

“Finally, we defined our net-zero ambition and decarbonisation roadmaps which allowed us to announce our net zero ambition this year.”
