API invokes provisional licensing for API CH‐4, CI‐4, CJ‐4, CK‐4 and FA‐4

The American Petroleum Institute (API) announced that it has invoked provisional licensing for API CH‐4, CI‐4, CI‐4 PLUS, CJ‐4, CK‐4 and FA‐4, due to the unavailability of the Mack T‐12 (ASTM D7422) engine test at independent laboratories. The API sent out the notice on March 17.

“The ASTM D02.B02 Volvo/Mack Surveillance Panel has Informed API that the Mack T‐12 (ASTM D7422) engine test is currently not available at independent laboratories,” according to API’s Jeffrey Harmening, Manager – EOLCS/DEF/MOM.

The Mack T-12 test evaluates the wear performance of an engine lubricant in turbocharged intercooled diesel engines equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and operating on ultra‐low sulfur diesel fuel.

“In response to this situation, API’s Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) has invoked Provisional Licensing in accordance with paragraph 6.7 of API 1509. Provisional Licensing applies to oil marketers that need to run the Mack T‐12 test to qualify a formulation as any of the following: API CH‐4, CI‐4, CI‐4 PLUS, CJ‐4, CK‐4 and API FA‐4.”

Provisional Licensing will be invoked immediately and will close on September 17, 2021. Before September 17, API will review the situation at the independent labs and determine if the provisional licensing period should be extended.
