Shanghai to implement Phase IV emission standard

Shanghai is set to become the second city after Beijing to introduce the Phase IV emission standard for gasoil and gasoline, an industry source said. Beijing implemented the Phase IV emission standard from March 1, 2008, prior to the Beijing Olympics. The Phase IV emission standard, which is broadly equivalent to Euro IV emission standards, sets the maximum sulfur content in gasoline and gasoil at 50 parts per million (ppm), from 500 ppm currently in place. Sinopec’s 20 million metric ton per year Zhenhai refinery in east China’s Zhejiang province is expected to supply gasoil and gasoline in keeping with Phase IV emission standard from November, after its newly built 1.5 million metric ton per year gasoline desulfurization unit becomes operational.
