IAA 2015 – Scalable and Efficient Transmission Technology for Future Cars
- Production volume of Getrag transmissions will increase to approximately six million by 2020, turnover will be approximately 5 billion Euro
- The share of dual-clutch and hybrid transmissions will increase to approximately 50 percent by 2020
- Getrag consequently builds on optimum efficiency, standardised design principles and scalable hybrid technology
Untergruppenbach, Requirements in the worldwide transmission market are driven by various trends. The Asian car market continues to grow, CO2 limits are becoming more stringent worldwide. Downsizing engines are becoming more common, as are automatic transmissions. Getrag responds to these trends with a range of flexible transmission families – from manual transmissions to highly-efficient dual-clutch transmissions and hybrid transmissions that are scalable from mild to plug-in hybrid.
Requirements in the global transmission market have rapidly changed over the last ten years. The car market in China overhauled the European market in 2012 and it is ahead by some distance, with almost 25 million registrations per year. Regarding manual transmissions, a trend from five to six speeds can be seen. Turbocharged “downsizing” engines with fewer cylinders are becoming increasingly important especially in Europe, whilst naturally aspirated engines still dominate in Asia. Dual-clutch transmissions become more and more popular: The 2015 production volume of this type has grown to around six millions within few years and is expected to rise to eleven million units until 2020. Getrag will benefit from these trends: Production volume of all Getrag transmissions will increase from around 4 million units today to 6 million in 2020; turnover is expected to increase from 3 to 5 billion Euros.
“We have adapted our product range to meet the needs of a changing market” says Mihir Kotecha, Getrag CEO. “We produce flexible and efficient transmissions in Europe and China that are based on a common product philosophy.” Getrag has produced layshaft transmissions for 80 years. Initially the supplier made transmissions for motorbikes, and since 1951 for cars. The first little step towards automating transmissions came in 1957 with the “Selectromat” in the Goggomobil. This semi-automatic transmission changes gears electromechanically as soon as the driver presses the clutch, having preselected a gear. The first fully automated transmission arrived in the middle of the 1960s, namely the Glas 1700 with an automated manual transmission made by Getrag. Smart and BMW used modern automated manual transmissions by Getrag later on as well. In 2008, the first large-series dual-clutch transmission was introduced, the 6DCT450, which has been proven to this day.
With regard to more and more demanding fleet consumption and CO2 targets, fuel efficiency is a major challenge. Layshaft transmissions with their unsurpassed efficiency remain to provide the adequate solution, even with increasing automation: “Automation is a precondition for new technologies such as Car2X or driver assistance systems up to autonomous driver functions. In any scale, this requires intelligent and efficient transmissions like our dual-clutch and hybrid transmissions”, says Kotecha.
Getrag is exhibiting a range of products at IAA 2015 that meet future requirements as well as current needs. This includes flexible manual transmissions such as the new 6MTT215 for small and compact vehicles and the modular 6MTI550, designed for various applications in the niche segment of powerful vehicles with rear-wheel drive.
The share of dual-clutch transmissions in the automatic transmission market will almost double by 2020. Getrag exhibit their third generation of dual-clutch transmissions, with the 7DCT300 as an all-wheel version and the all-new, particularly compact 6DCT200 for the low-cost and low-torque vehicle segment. The new on-demand “Smart Actuation” enables automatic shift/clutch actuation with approximately 30 W and less.
The next level of automation is represented by the new 7HDT300 and 6HDT200 hybrid transmissions. They are based on Getrag dual-clutch transmissions and combine efficiency with an exclusive hybrid architecture, allowing for seamlessly scaling electrical output from 15 to over 75 kW.
“Getrag continues to build on efficient technology based on layshaft transmissions”, says Mihir Kotecha. “We produce scalable and efficient transmissions for diverse requirements of the global market. Smart Actuation helps to put the efficiency of our dual-clutch and hybrid transmissions to full effect. Our hybrid transmissions can be easily scaled from mild up to plug-in hybrid. We are ready for current and future mobility demands.”
