Thailand’s MICE industry celebrates success of IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019 event

Big thumbs up from world's largest power generation conference held outside America for first time

BANGKOK, April 22, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Thailand's MICE industry is basking in the glow after successfully organising the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) Generation Transmission and Distribution (GTD) Grand International Conference & Exposition Asia 2019 (IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019), held from 19 to 23 March in Bangkok after more than 40 years of being organised only in the United States.

Organised under the theme of 'Big Shift in Power and Energy', the IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019 conference and exhibition boasted over 400 exhibiting booths and more than 10,000 visitors from all over the world, with keynote speakers and industry experts from the US, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, China and Singapore.

Mrs. Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President – Business, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said hosting the first IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019 held outside of the United States represented a huge win for Thailand's dynamic MICE industry. TCEB supported the IEEE PES Thailand Chapter in bidding for this event.

"We are delighted that the first IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019 event in Thailand and Asia was hailed as a success by both organisers and participants. The success of this event is an important validation of TCEB's new 'Thailand Redefine Your Business Events' branding. It positions TCEB as a co-creator, partner, collaborator and thought leader for the business events industry for major international conferences and exhibitions," Mrs. Nichapa added.

Beyond the cutting edge technology and new trends in power and energy, Mr. Thomas W. Mayne, IEEE PES Vice President – Meetings, said Thailand won big by doing what it does best: organising outstanding events supported by amazing Thai hospitality.

"At IEEE PES we evaluated several cities and one of the key issues that we looked at is the local support. Everyone in Thailand has been tremendous. In fact, they ran the conference, we just sat back and helped. The event was outstanding in all regards, BITEC has great facilities, and of course the food was fabulous," Mr. Mayne, concluded.

The IEEE PES GTD ASIA 2019 event consisted of three main profiles in electricity and energy industry grouping into Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution and Renewable Energy related to all engineering and technological fields.

Participants attending the event agreed. Mr. Patrick Avery, Vice President, Power Grid Automation, G&W Electric Company, said: "Thailand as the host country was excellent and the event was also excellent for our company. Bangkok is a very good meeting destination as it has the infrastructure, all the amenities, vendors, and support facilities to host this important event.

"We got to meet all the major utilities in the area while supporting our Thai customers, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and Bangkok's Metropolitan Electricity Authority. In terms of power and energy, I complimented PEA on being the best in class utility. They were voted that locally, but when you look at what they're doing from an innovation roadmap standpoint, they're one of the best utilities globally."

Organising Chair Assistant Professor Dr. Nopporn Leepreechanon, said: "A lot of discussion that involved the three major issues of generation, transmission and distribution plus renewable energy were related to the newest technology. There were also many conference topics on power and energy that links to digitalisation, with many new ideas presented on how we can use digitalisation to manage industries, energy generation and electrical sectors."
