Chevron Oronite® receives safety awards from Union Pacific and NPRA
20 June 2011 – SAN RAMON, CA – Chevron Oronite Company LLC recently announced that its manufacturing site in Belle Chasse, Louisiana (Oak Point), has received the Union Pacific Railroad Chemical Transportation Safety Pinnacle Award. Chosen for its superior performance among hundreds of industrial manufacturers, Chevron Oronite earned Union Pacific’s Pinnacle honor for its efforts to eliminate chemical releases from rail cars known as a non-accident release (NAR).
“Chemical transportation safety is critical and we thank Chevron Oronite for its continuing efforts to eliminate chemical releases from rail cars,” said Diane Duren, Vice President and General Manager-Chemicals, for Union Pacific. “Rail is the safest way to haul the chemicals that Americans use every day, whether it’s to keep our drinking water safe or to help our farms that help feed the world. We work closely with our customers to help prevent a release during transit of chemical shipments and jointly demonstrate a commitment to the safe transportation of hazardous materials.” This is the fourth year in a row that this facility – which handles 4,000 rail cars and 2,000 tank cars annually – has received this award.
Union Pacific is not the only industry group to recently recognize the outstanding performance of the Oak Point facility. This same plant recently received the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) Merit Safety Award, meaning that the facility: (1) achieved an employee total recordable incidence rate of 0.8 or less without a workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee, or (2) that the facility did not have the equivalent of a Tier 1 Process Safety Event that results in days away and/or restricted case of an employee, contractor, or subcontractor, a fatality of a third-party individual, or (3) an officially declared community evacuation or community shelter-in-place during the calendar year 2010.
“Everyone at Oak Point takes responsibility for living out our core values of ‘no one gets hurt, ever’ and ‘we do not spill or cause environmental incidents,’” said Koon Eng Goh, Regional Manager, Americas Region, Chevron Oronite. “Earning these prestigious awards from Union Pacific and NPRA doesn’t happen without paying close attention to keeping our facility and fleet in good repair, assessing risks before acting, following proper procedures, securing the facility each day, and maintaining accountability at each step of the process.”
