NXP and Kumbaya Collaborate to Connect the Last Billion
World leader in secure connectivity solutions, NXP, to supply key
components for Kumbaya zeroXess single board computers, a modular
solar-powered system to bring electricity, connectivity and content to
off-grid communities globally
SAN JOSE, Calif. & RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#ConnectTheUnconnected–NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ:NXPI), today announced that Kumbaya,
Inc., the company behind the zeroXess solution for off-grid power,
connectivity and content, has chosen NXP’s i.MX 6 applications
processors and Kinetis microcontrollers for its recently launched
zeroXess single board computers. With NXP’s processor series portfolio,
Kumbaya is able to easily and quickly manufacture zeroXess computers to
provide highly optimized power, connectivity and content to off-grid
communities globally.
NXP, one of the largest non-memory semiconductor suppliers and the
leading semiconductor supplier for secure identification, digital
networking, and power efficiency, has collaborated with Kumbaya to
provide key components for the zeroXess power and connectivity device.
As a result of the companies’ collaboration, people in off-grid
communities gain access to an economically-priced home energy and
communication hub for collecting and distributing power to other
devices, equipped with a touch screen to allow users to easily view,
monitor and control power, connectivity, lights, communication and the
consumption of information.
“NXP is excited to be a part of Kumbaya’s mission of delivering a
secure, high performance platform for a smarter world,” said Richard
Clemmer, NXP Chief Executive Officer. “We’re pleased to work with
Kumbaya to provide a user friendly, integrated solution, to the
communities that need it most – connecting the unconnected.”
A simple single board computer, zeroXess is powered by 120W solar panels
with industry-leading efficiency. Equipped with agnostic connectivity
and direct one and two-way communications leveraging UMTS/LTE/TVWS,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and satellite connectivity, the system not only brings
the power of sunlight indoors, powering four LED light fixtures and up
to six USB-powered devices, such as mobile phones and medical devices,
but also delivers TV and radio capabilities to bring local news,
information and entertainment to off-grid communities. Built-in sensors
within the system detect and warn against hazards like CO/CO2.,
temperature and humidity. The platform also allows access for
non-invasive eHealth monitoring devices and point-of-care decision
support.
“In collaborating with NXP, Kumbaya can better provide critical power,
connectivity, and content to off-grid communities, with quality
components and the support of one of the largest players in the field,”
said Mike Freni, founder and CEO of Kumbaya. “This technology is truly
changing lives for the better, and working with NXP ensures our growth
plans to reach as many communities as possible in our effort to connect
the last billion are both solid and sustainable. Together we will make a
lasting positive impact.”
