Ricardo Energy & Environment is supporting the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in organizing, hosting and delivering a one-day workshop on the use of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in the transport sector at ADB’s Transport Forum 2016 (12-16 September 2016, ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines).

The biennial ADB Transport Forum is the premier transport knowledge-sharing event in Asia and the Pacific. The 2016 forum will focus on supporting countries in Asia to plan for long-term investment in low carbon transport in the context of their sustainable development goals and the Paris Climate Agreement – which commits participating countries to limiting global temperature increase to ‘well-below’ two degrees Celsius.

Ricardo Energy & Environment will lead a one-day workshop on the final day of the Forum exploring the use of hydrogen as a possible way of improving the sustainability of the transport sector. Ricardo’s specialists will be joined by experts from Europe, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who will provide their insights and experience in supporting the deployment of hydrogen to ADB staff and representatives from developing member countries.

The workshop will cover drivers and barriers to the use of hydrogen and its integration in the energy system. It will also provide insights into deployment strategies and roadmaps from different regions as well as presenting specific real-life case studies. The sessions will benefit from Ricardo’s ongoing work with governments and organisations across the world on overcoming the technology, policy and institutional barriers to developing sustainable transport systems.

Hydrogen is a flexible energy carrier that can be generated from a range of centralised and decentralised sources, and can be used in a number of sectors including transport, heat and power. Over the last decade, hydrogen and fuel cell related technologies have matured significantly. Several car manufacturers have launched hydrogen fuel cell powered electric vehicles, while an increasing number of governments across Europe and Asia are investing in hydrogen-based, large-scale energy storage projects.

The Ricardo group supports this process through world-class, evidence based guidance on developing the technology and capacity to advance in low carbon and sustainable transport. This includes assessing the feasibility of nationwide electric vehicle deployment, supporting countries’ development goals by reviewing low-carbon transport policy and advancing next-generation technology through the Ricardo Vehicle Emissions Research Centre.
