As auto manufacturers strive to meet ever increasing demands of governmental regulations, the role of engine oils will become more important in helping meet fuel economy requirements. ILSAC GF-6, the next in the series of passenger car engine oil specifications, will include updates to the fuel-savings capabilities of engine oil, along with improvements in overall oil performance. GF-6 will include at least three new engine tests to replace those tests that will become obsolete due to the unavailability of test components. Other engine tests may be included in GF-6 to cover oil requirements based on new engine technology. This presentation will review the performance requirements for GF-6, new tests descriptions and the timeline for the development and implementation of ILSAC GF-6.
